Father Alan T. Doyle, M.M.

Father Alan T. Doyle, M.M., who served in Taiwan all of his nearly 57 years as a Maryknoll priest, died May 9 at Taiwan University National Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan. He was 84.

Father Doyle served in administrative positions in Taiwan over the decades, including regional superior of the Maryknoll Taiwan Region, 1991-1997. In 1987, he opened the Taipei branch of Maryknoll’s Language Service Center, teaching the Taiwanese, Hakka and Mandarin languages to newly arrived missioners. Over decades, he also worked to preserve and develop the Hoklo language.

Born in Great Neck, Long Island, he held a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Maryknoll College in Glen Ellyn, Ill., and a bachelor of divinity degree and a master’s in religious education from Maryknoll Seminary in Ossining, where he completed his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained in 1964.
He is survived by several nephews.

A Funeral Mass was offered May 20 at Queen of Apostles Chapel at the Maryknoll Mission Center in Ossining. Burial was planned for May 29 in Taipei.
