Father Donald G. Devine, S.J.

Father Donald G. Devine, S.J., faculty chaplain at Fordham Preparatory School in the Bronx, died Dec. 26, the day after his 80th birthday.

He had served as Fordham Prep’s faculty chaplain since 2009.

He was a teacher and chaplain at Xavier High School in Manhattan, 1973-1979, and then assisted the New York Jesuit provincial in overseeing secondary education throughout the province, 1979-1984.

He was principal of Canisius High School in Buffalo, 1970-1973, and taught and was chaplain at McQuaid Jesuit in Rochester, 1986-1988. He also taught at Brooklyn Prep, 1959-1962.

He was the director of Xavier High School on the island of Chuuk in the Caroline Islands of the Pacific, 1984-1986.

He served at Loyola Retreat House in Morristown, N.J., beginning in 1989, and was parochial vicar of a parish in Buffalo, 2005-2009.

Born in Brooklyn, he entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1952 after graduating from Xavier High School. He made his first vows at St. Andrew-on-Hudson, Poughkeepsie. He studied for the priesthood at Woodstock College in Woodstock, Md., and was ordained in 1965 at Fordham University Church.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 31 at Fordham University Church. Burial was at the Jesuit cemetery in Auriesville.
