Father Edward J. McGovern, M.M., who served in Cambodia for 10 years, died Feb. 26 at Maryknoll Society Center in Ossining. He was 65.

Father McGovern was in Cambodia, 2004-2014, and he served as secretary general, 2008-2014. He also served in Ossining as superior of the senior missioner community, 2018-2019, and director of Mission St. Teresa, 2015-2018.

The Bronx-born graduate of Regis High School in Manhattan entered Maryknoll in 1998, made his final vows in 2004 and was ordained to the priesthood in 2004.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from Fordham University, the Bronx; juris doctor degree from Fordham University School of Law, the Bronx; and a master’s of divinity from Catholic Theological Union, Chicago.

Before entering the Maryknoll Fathers, he was assistant district attorney for the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office, assistant attorney general for the New York State Department of Law in the Criminal Prosecutions Bureau, and assistant district attorney and deputy bureau chief at the Queens County District Attorney’s Office in the Arson, Economic and Environmental Crimes Bureau.

His brother, John, and his sister, Margaret Byrnes, survive him.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated March 3 in Queen of Apostles Chapel, Ossining. Burial was in Ferncliff Cemetery, Hartsdale.
