Father Gerard O’Shea

Father Gerard O’Shea, a U.S. Navy chaplain for 20 years, died on Sept. 22 in Florida. He was 76.

Father O’Shea was with the U.S. Navy, 1976-1996, and retired with the rank of lieutenant commander.

Father O’Shea was parochial vicar at St. Augustine’s in Larchmont, 1998-1999; Visitation in the Bronx, 1974-1976; St. John’s in West Hurley, 1969-1974; and Immaculate Conception in Woodbourne, 1966. He served at Mount Loretto on Staten Island, 1967-1968, and as a chaplain at Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Home in the Bronx, 1968.

Born in New York City, he was ordained for the archdiocesan priesthood by Cardinal Spellman in 1966, after studies at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie.

Father O’Shea was cremated with his ashes scattered at sea. A Memorial Mass was offered on Oct. 8 at St. Michael’s Church in Fernandina Beach, Fla., and a Memorial Mass is being celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
