Father James J. Fedigan, S.J.

Father James J. Fedigan, S.J., who served at St. Francis Xavier parish in Manhattan for eight years, died May 31 in Murray-Weigel Hall in the Bronx, CNY has learned. He was 87.

Father Fedigan was at St. Francis Xavier parish, 1967-1975. He taught at Xavier High School, Manhattan, 1958-1961, and also served in Brooklyn, Florida, Massachusetts and Ireland.

Born in Manhattan, he entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) at St. Andrew-on-Hudson, Poughkeepsie, in 1951 after completing one year of studies at St. Peter’s College, Jersey City, N.J.

He completed his novitiate and juniorate in Poughkeepsie before philosophical studies at Loyola Seminary in Shrub Oak. He attended Woodstock College in Maryland for theological studies.

He was ordained to the priesthood by Cardinal Francis Spellman at Fordham University, the Bronx, in 1965. He professed final vows with the Jesuits at Xavier High School, Manhattan, in 1968.

His brothers, Eugene, John, Robert and Michael, and his sisters, Eileen, Catherine and Maryellen, survive him.

A private Funeral Mass was offered at Murray Weigel Hall due to Covid-19 restrictions. Burial was in Jesuit Cemetery, Auriesville.
