Father James Whitmore, M.M.

Father James Whitmore, M.M., who served in the missions of Japan and did development work in the United States, died March 19 at St. Teresa’s Residence, Ossining. He was 86.

After he was assigned to Japan in 1959, he served as a parochial vicar in the Sapporo Diocese until 1969. He did development work in St. Louis and Denver until 1972, when he returned to Japan. He was named administrative assistant for the Hokkaido area in 1973.

After further studies, he was appointed director of the overseas training program at Maryknoll in Ossining.

Father Whitmore went back to Japan, where he supervised the Maryknoll Tokyo house and coordinated both the Japan area overseas training program and the lay mission program in Tokyo, 1977-1979.

He returned to the United States in 1979 to serve in the formation education department and was named rector. He then became director of the pre-acceptance program for Maryknoll aspirants at Seton Hall University, 1980-1985. He did development work in St. Louis and Seattle, 1986-1991.

He retired in 2001 and moved to St. Teresa’s Residence in 2005.

Born in Kansas City, Mo., he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and entered the Maryknoll Fathers in 1953. He was ordained in 1959.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in foreign service from Georgetown University and a master’s in religious education from Maryknoll Seminary.

His sister Pat Limpic survives him.

A Funeral Mass was offered March 26 at Our Lady Queen of Apostles Chapel, Ossining, followed by burial in the Maryknoll Society cemetery.
