Father Jerome McHugh, O.F.M. Cap., a former provincial secretary, treasurer and archivist for the Capuchin Franciscan Friars of the Province of St. Mary, died Feb. 22 at Cabrini of Westchester in Dobbs Ferry. He was 85.

He served as provincial assistant secretary and secretary, treasurer and archivist of the New York-New England Province in Providence, R.I., and as extraordinary confessor of novices in Milton, Mass, 1962-1971. When the provincial offices moved to St. Conrad Friary in White Plains in 1971, he continued as provincial secretary and treasurer through 2017.

He was a parochial vicar at Sacred Heart parish in Yonkers, 1961-1962. He assisted at Masses at St. Anthony of Padua parish, West Harrison; St. Theresa, Briarcliff Manor; and Our Lady of the Wayside, Millwood.

For more than 25 years he was recording secretary of the North American and Pacific Capuchin Conference and assisted the financial offices of the Capuchin generalate in Rome.

He moved to the senior friary community of St. Clare in Yonkers in 2017 and to Cabrini of Westchester in Dobbs Ferry in 2018.
Born in Yonkers, he entered the Capuchin Franciscans in 1952. He made his final profession in 1956. He was ordained in 1960 at Sacred Heart Church in Yonkers.

He is survived by a sister, Martha McHugh-Hubbard and a brother, Father John P. McHugh, O.F.M. Cap.

A Funeral Mass was offered Feb. 28 at Sacred Heart Church in Yonkers. Burial was at the friars’ cemetery in Yonkers.
