Father John Colman Logan, O. Carm.

Father John Colman Logan, O. Carm., who served for nearly 30 years as head Catholic chaplain at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, died Jan. 2 after a long illness. He was 76.

He served at Bellevue from 1978 to 2007, when he retired.

He taught and was principal of St. Albert’s Junior Seminary, Middletown, 1977-1978. He earlier taught at high schools in Rochester and Auburn, and in Pottsville, Pa.

He also served as prior of Our Lady of the Scapular-St. Stephen’s Priory, Manhattan, 1984-1994 and 2000-2007, and at a priory in Rochester.

After his retirement, he moved to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Priory, Middletown. In 2011, he moved to St. Albert’s Priory, Middletown, where he resided until his death.

Born in Brooklyn, he entered the Order of Carmelites of the North American Province of St. Elias at St. Albert’s Junior Seminary in Middletown in 1954, after graduating from Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx. He professed final vows in 1960 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1964 after he finished theology studies at Whitefriars Hall in Washington, D.C.

He graduated from St. Bonaventure University in Olean with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s in philosophy and English.

He is survived by three sisters, Margaret Franklin, Anne Corcoran and Bridget Wilson; one brother, Ronald Logan; and 14 nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 7 at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Middletown. Burial was in the Carmelite Cemetery at St. Albert’s in Middletown.
