Father John E. Conway, M.M.

Father John E. Conway, M.M., who served in Kenya for 31 years, died Nov. 9 in the Assisted Living Center at Maryknoll in Ossining. He was 90.

Father Conway was in Kenya, 1999-2018 and 1982-1994, where he was elected regional superior for two three-year terms and taught at the Apostles of Jesus Major Seminary in Nairobi. He was co-director of Maryknoll Missions Institute at Maryknoll Sisters Center, Ossining, 1994-1999, and also served in California, Tanzania and Samoa.

Born in New York City, he was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Preparatory High School in Barrytown and served as a Christian Brother for 22 years before entering Maryknoll in 1970. He professed final vows in 1973, the same year he was ordained for Maryknoll.

He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemistry from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. He received a master’s in theology from Manhattan College, the Bronx.

His brother, Edmond Conway, survives him.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 12 in Queen of Apostles Chapel at Maryknoll Society Center, Ossining. Burial was in Maryknoll Society Cemetery, Ossining.
