Father John F. “Bud’’ Talbot McCann, S.J.

Father John F. “Bud’’ Talbot McCann, S.J., a native New Yorker who served in Puerto Rico for 46 years, died March 19 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was 88.

In Puerto Rico, Father Talbot served in various roles including as principal of a high school and a minor seminary, pastoral center director of Puerto Rico’s State University, regional superior and president of the Conference of Religious of Puerto Rico.

He also organized retreats for Jesuits and served for many years at Fondita de Jesus, a center serving homeless people.

Father Talbot was the vice provincial for social and pastoral ministries of the Jesuits’ New York Province, 1973-1978.

Born in Manhattan, he entered the Society of Jesus at St. Andrew-on-Hudson in Poughkeepsie in 1946 and professed final vows in 1963. He was ordained to the priesthood at Fordham University in 1959.

He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from St. Louis University.

He is survived by his brother Gerry.

Father Talbot McCann donated his body to science. A Memorial Mass was offered March 25 at Parroquia San Ignacia in San Juan.
