Father John F. Grinsell, S.D.B.

Father John F. Grinsell, S.D.B., parochial vicar of St. John Bosco parish in Port Chester since 2017, died March 12 at White Plains Hospital of complications from Covid-19. He was 79.

Father Grinsell also was director of mission for the Don Bosco Community Center, Port Chester, since 2015. He served as parochial vicar of Holy Rosary Church, Port Chester, 2015-2017 and 1998-1999, and was director of Salesian High School, New Rochelle, 1980-1986.

He was master of novices for the U.S. Salesians, 1986-1989, and also served in New Jersey and Florida.

Born in Brooklyn, he entered the novitiate of the Salesians of Don Bosco in 1959, professed final vows in 1966 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1971.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Don Bosco College, Newton, N.J., and a master’s in Christian spirituality from Creighton University, Omaha, Neb.

His brother, Edward, and sisters, Patricia Akers and Frances Milam, survive him.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated March 16 at St. John Bosco Church, Port Chester. Burial took place in Salesian Cemetery, Goshen, the next day.
