Father John J. Rohr, S.J., a retreat master, counselor and teacher, died Jan. 1 at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center in the Bronx. He was 78 and had resided at the Jesuit health center at Murray-Weigel Hall in the Bronx since 2006.

He served for many years in his native Buffalo and its environs as a teacher, parish priest and hospital chaplain. He then moved into retreat ministry. He served from 1983 to 1986 at Mount Manresa Retreat House on Staten Island. From 1987 until several years ago he gave retreats and was a counselor for persons with alcohol or drug addictions. During this time he was based at St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, N.J., where he previously taught for a year.

He entered the Jesuits at St. Andrew-on-Hudson, Poughkeepsie, in 1947, and studied there and at Weston College in Massachusetts and Woodstock College in Maryland. He was ordained at Fordham June 18, 1960. Before and after his ordination he taught in the Philippines. He held a master’s degree in mathematics from Stanford University.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 4 in the chapel at Murray-Weigel Hall. Burial was in the Jesuit Cemetery at Auriesville.
