Father John P. McKernan, M.M.

Father John P. McKernan, M.M., who was a Maryknoll missioner in Taiwan for 51 years, died Dec. 14 at St. Teresa's Residence in Ossining. He was 83.

   He was assigned to Taiwan immediately after his ordination in 1952, where he studied the Chinese language spoken there. He served as an assistant pastor until 1957 at the Maryknoll mission in Nan Tou, then became the first pastor of a new mission in Erh Lin.

   He also served as pastor of several parishes in Taiwan, including Our Savior Cathedral parish in Taichung City, and for several years was assistant to Maryknoll's regional superior in Taiwan.

   He returned to the U.S. in 2003.

   Born in Lawrence, Mass., he entered Maryknoll in 1943. He studied at Maryknoll College in Clarks Summit, Pa., and Maryknoll Seminary in Ossining.

   A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 20 at Queen of Apostles Chapel, Maryknoll, with burial in Maryknoll Cemetery.
