Father Julian Guzman, S.D.S.

Father Julian Guzman, S.D.S., who served for many years at parishes in Ulster County, died June 13 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. He was 87.

Father Guzman, beginning in 1978, assisted several Ulster County churches including St. Colman in East Kingston, St. Peter in Kingston, St. John the Evangelist in Saugerties, St. Joseph in Saugerties and St. Catherine Labouré in Lake Katrine. He served as chaplain to the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill in Saugerties.

He also served as caregiver to his aging mother until her death in 2004.

He taught theology at Mount St. Paul College in Waukesha, Wis., and Spanish, Latin and religion at St. Pius X Prep Seminary in Galt, Calif. He briefly served as a pastor in Leonardtown, Md.

Born in Manhattan, he entered the Society of the Divine Savior (Salvatorians) in 1961, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1968.

He held a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a master’s in theology, both from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

Father Guzman is survived by his sister, Susan Parks, and a niece and three nephews.
A Funeral Mass was offered June 18 at St. Catherine Labouré Church. Burial was at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Kingston.
