Father Lionel G. Trudel, M.M., a missioner to Bolivia who also served in parish and hospital ministry in the archdiocese, died on June 22 at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow. He was 78. He was assigned to Bolivia after his ordination for the Maryknoll Fathers in 1956. He did parish work and then moved to Achacachi to work among the Aymara people, descendants of the Inca civilization, in the early 1960s. He also served in Santa Cruz, Cotoca and La Paz. His last Bolivian assignment was in Riberalta, the Maryknoll jungle mission in the Pando Vicariate. He returned to the United States in 1990 and ministered to the Hispanic communities at St. John the Evangelist parish in Beacon, and in parishes in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. In 1995 he took up chaplaincy work at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston, where he remained until his retirement in 2000. Born in Slatersville, R.I., he studied for the priesthood at Maryknoll Seminary in Ossining and was ordained in 1956. Father Trudel is survived by his sisters, Yvette Walsh and Doris Boutin. A Funeral Mass was offered June 27 in Queen of Apostles Chapel at Maryknoll. Burial was in Maryknoll Cemetery.
