Father Paul John

Father Paul John, who served as parochial vicar of St. Joseph’s parish in Bronxville since 2019, died Feb. 23 due to complications from Covid-19. He was 70.

Father John was at St. Joseph’s, 2019-2021. He also served as parochial vicar at St. Barnabas, the Bronx, 2016-2019, and St. Gregory the Great, Harrison, 2007-2011 and 1997-2002.

He also served in the Archdiocese of Pondicherry in his native India.

Born in Pondicherry, India, he was ordained in India in 1978 and came to the United States in 1997 to pursue his Ph.D. in administration and supervision of Catholic schools at Fordham University, the Bronx.

In addition to his doctorate, he earned several degrees in his native India: a bachelor’s in math from St. Joseph’s College; a bachelor’s in education from St. Xavier’s College of Education; a bachelor’s in theology from St. Peter’s Pontifical Seminary; and a master’s in English from Madurai Kamaraj University.

His brothers, S.J. Peter and S.J. Rheeman; and his sisters, Sarala and Vimala, survive him.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated March 1 at St. Joseph’s Church. Father John was later cremated, and burial will take place in India.
