Father Raymond A. Schroth, S.J.

Father Raymond A. Schroth, S.J., who served as associate editor of America magazine, died July 1 at Murray-Weigel Hall, the Bronx. He was 85.

Father Schroth, the author of seven books, was associate editor of America from 2010 until his death. He was assistant dean at Fordham, 1996-1999, where he taught communications, 1970-1979.

He also taught and served as dean at a number of other Jesuit institutions.

Born in Trenton, N.J., he attended Fordham University and served in the U.S.

Army, 1955-1957. He entered the Jesuit novitiate at St. Andrew-on-Hudson in 1957. He studied for the priesthood at Loyola Seminary, Shrub Oak, and Woodstock College in Maryland, and was ordained in 1967 at Fordham University Church. He professed final vows in 1976.

He earned his master’s in philosophy and doctorate in American studies at George Washington University, Washington, D.C.

A Memorial Mass will be offered at a later date. Burial was at the Jesuit Cemetery in Auriesville.
