Father Richard J. Quinn, M.M.

Father Richard J. Quinn, M.M., who served for many years as a Maryknoll missioner to East Africa, specializing in video production, died Jan. 27 at Maryknoll Society Center in Ossining. He was 93.

Father Quinn was director of Ukweli Video Productions (UVP) under the auspices of the Archdiocese of Nairobi for 26 years, until 2007. Under his leadership, UVP produced more than 290 video documentaries, plays and docudramas. Many of the productions have appeared on television worldwide.

He studied video production at Fordham University and the University of Missouri.

Father Quinn earlier served as pastor and parochial vicar at parishes in East Africa. He supervised the creation of a lay leadership training center in Kenya. He spoke the Kisimbiti and Kiswahili languages. He helped to form the Mara Jazz Band, which was No. 1 on the music charts in East Africa for several years.

Born in Passaic, N.J., he entered Maryknoll Apostolic College in Clarks Summit, Pa., in 1945. He held a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, a bachelor’s in sacred theology, and a master’s in religious education, all from Maryknoll Seminary, Ossining. He was ordained a priest in 1954.

He is survived by nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass was offered Feb. 3 in Queen of the Apostles Chapel at Maryknoll Society Center. Burial was at the Maryknoll Society Cemetery.
