Father Richard Kardian, M.M.

Father Richard Kardian, M.M., who served for decades in Japan and Hawaii, died Jan. 19 at St. Teresa’s Residence, Ossining. He was 85.

He was assigned to Japan where he ministered in parishes, 1956-1974. He was also the head of the Maryknoll Tokyo Society House starting in 1971.

He then went to Hawaii where he served as pastor in Paparkou while establishing neighborhood associations. He was assistant regional superior of Maryknoll’s Hawaii Region, 1980-1983.

In 1991, he began work with his community’s development program until 2000. He lived at the Maryknoll Society House in Cleveland, Ohio, until 2009.

Born in Cleveland, he entered Maryknoll in 1947 and was ordained in 1956. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sacred theology and a master’s in religious education, both from Maryknoll Seminary.

His sisters Patricia Norman and Sister Mary Neil, S.N.D., survive him.

A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 23 in Queen of Apostles Chapel followed by burial at the Maryknoll Society Cemetery, Ossining.
