Father Stephen Doyle, O.F.M.

Father Stephen Doyle, O.F.M., who was an author, teacher and preacher, died Oct. 8 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass. He was 76.

For more than three decades, Father Doyle gave workshops on Sacred Scripture and preaching throughout North America and in Latin America, Ireland, India and Japan.

He was the author of several books, including “Understanding the New Testament” and “The Pilgrim’s New Guide to the Holy Land.” He also produced a series of videos on the Bible, preaching and the Holy Land. He guided more than 100 pilgrimages to the Holy Land, Greece and Asia Minor and Italy.

He taught at St. John Vianney Seminary in East Aurora, 1963-1965, and at Christ the King Seminary in Allegany, 1967-1969. He also served in New Jersey and Massachusetts.

Born in Philadelphia, he entered the Franciscans of the Holy Name Province in 1955 and professed final vows in 1959. He was ordained in 1962 after studying for the priesthood at Holy Name College in Washington, D.C.

He held a licentiate in Sacred Theology from The Catholic University of America and a licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome.

He is survived by his brothers Joseph Doyle, James Doyle and Father John Doyle, O.S.F.S., and sisters Gertrude Salerno and Margaret Bouffard.

A Memorial Mass was offered Oct. 12 at St. Anthony Shrine in Boston, Mass. His body was donated to science.
