Father T. Patrick Lynch, S.J.

Father T. Patrick Lynch, S.J., who taught English for more than 30 years at St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, N.J., died Feb. 28 at Murray-Weigel Hall, the Jesuit infirmary in the Bronx. He was 80.

He was a professor of English at St. Peter’s from 1974 to 2006, and served variously as chairman of the English Department and president of the faculty senate.

He also taught in the Philippines at San Jose Seminary in Manila, 1955-1958, the Ateneo de Davao, 1964-1966, and the Ateneo de Manila University, 1969-1974. He was a visiting professor at the Ateneo de Manila, 1981-1982, and taught English for a semester at the Universidad Centroamerica in Nicaragua in 1987.

He remained in residence at St. Peter’s College until he moved to Murray-Weigel Hall last year.

Born in Brooklyn, he entered the Jesuits in Poughkeepsie in 1948 and professed vows in 1950. He studied at Bellarmine College in Plattsburgh and Woodstock College in Maryland, and was ordained at Fordham University Church in 1961. He held a doctorate in English literature from Columbia University.

He is survived by a brother, Father Edward C. Lynch, S.J., and a sister, Sister Barbara M. Lynch, C.S.J.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated March 3 in the chapel at Murray-Weigel Hall. Burial was in the Jesuit Cemetery at Auriesville.

A Memorial Mass is to be celebrated at St. Peter’s College on a date to be announced.
