Born in Chicago, he entered the Maryknoll Fathers in 1960. He studied for the priesthood at Maryknoll Seminary, and was ordained a priest in 1965. He held a bachelor’s degree in history and philosophy from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., where he was a standout on track and football teams.

He is survived by his brother, Brian, and his sisters, Mary Pat Renard, Rita Wesley and Susan Shields.
