Father W. Alan Briceland, S.J., who served as a hospital chaplain and a teacher in the archdiocese, died Sept. 14 at Murray-Weigel Hall in the Bronx. He was 83.

He began his ministry as a hospital chaplain in 1993. He remained in that ministry the rest of his priestly life, serving at Coler Hospital on Roosevelt Island, St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers and Elmhurst Hospital in Queens.

He taught theology at Xavier High School in Manhattan, 1971-1992. Early in his ministry he taught at high schools in Rochester and Buffalo. He also served as superior of the local Jesuit community in Manhattan.

Born in Syracuse, he entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1951 and was ordained a priest in 1965.

He is survived by two sisters, Josephy “Betty” Dunne and Eileen Bleem.

A Funeral Mass was offered Sept. 18 at Fordham University Church. Burial was at the Jesuit Cemetery in Auriesville.
