George E. Snyder

George E. Snyder, who served for 50 years as sacristan, custodian and gardener at St. Denis parish in Yonkers, died Sept. 6. He was 79.

His years of service at St. Denis began as a temporary assignment but lasted half a century until his retirement in 2000. In addition to his regular responsibilities, he was a Eucharistic minister, retreat coordinator, musician in the parish band, coach of its championship basketball team, and coordinator of the annual Mother’s Day breakfast and Thanksgiving food basket drive.

He was honored on several occasions including the proclamation of June 3, 2000, as George Snyder Day in Yonkers, and the naming of a portion of Lawrence Street as George Snyder Drive.

He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rosanne; their children, Geralyn Valente, Katrina Snyder, Janet Cabassa and George Snyder Jr.; and a sister, Ann Radkold.

A Funeral Mass was offered Sept. 10 at St. Denis Church. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson.
