George J. Habernig III

George J. Habernig III, who served as a freelance photographer for Catholic New York for many years, died Oct. 7 at Northern Duchess Hospital in Rhinebeck. He was 72.

Born in Newburgh, he was a graduate of Kingston High School. He worked at Artcraft Camera in Kingston, where he developed his love for photography, and pursued a professional career specializing in weddings, other special events and portraits.

In 1994, he accepted a position teaching photography at John A. Coleman High School in Hurley.

In addition to his father, George J. Habernig Jr., he is survived by his five children, George JV., Tara Habernig, Patrick, Katie Wiederspiel and John, and six grandchildren. Other survivors include four brothers, Michael, James, Thomas and Timothy, and one sister, Maryann Mucia.

He was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 12 at St. Joseph Church in Kingston. Burial was at St. Mary of the Snow Cemetery, Saugerties.
