Heroic Memories

Posted

When I saw Maria Bastone’s photo of the Christmas Eve Mass at Truck One (CNY, Jan. 5), I had a proud tear in my eye and a lump in my throat.

The pride and pain of the extraordinary bravery and life-giving sacrifice of my twin brother (ESU Police Officer John D’Allara) came back front and center 16 years later. He was killed in the line of duty on Sept. 11, 2001.

I am not surprised that the ESU Police would have a Mass like this one. During the aftermath of Sept. 11, family members and NYPD ESU (Emergency Services Unit) had many Masses like the one shown, including one on Easter Sunday 2002. I have found that the Catholic faith of the NYPD is very strong. However, it is not flaunted and is usually out of the public eye.

Thank you for a wonderful New Year’s front page.
