As soon as I read the article on Father Thomas Farrell in the Feb. 25 edition, I had to respond with congratulations. The author limns an image of New York and its leadership in the Church without any decorative language. The position of the radical priest who would garner accolades today was reviled for the most part for his opposition to slavery as well as his open arms to the freedmen. The Church of that period has fortunately changed, but Kathleen Gallagher's musing in 'Vestiges' serve as an impetus for the modern Catholic to look inside his heart and examine some current issues brought forth by Black Lives Matter. Blatant racism is one thing, but subtle attitudes can be just as destructive. Thanks for printing what I found to be outstanding inspiration for my own self-examination.
