Michael Gorman singled home the winning run as the Iona Preparatory School baseball team defeated Msgr. Farrell, 5-4, in nine innings to capture the CHSAA AA City Championship at St. John’s University on June 10.

The Gaels (20-6), who won their first title since 2012, trailed 4-2 before rallying for two runs in the sixth inning.

“It’s a testament to these kids, how hard they work and no quit all the way to the end,’’ said Iona Prep coach Ryan Mahoney. “This was a very special year for our baseball program.’’

Christian Rosell was 3 for 3 with two triples, two runs scored and an RBI to earn the Jack Curran Postseason Most Valuable Player honor for Iona Prep. Winning pitcher John Mirrione threw three scoreless innings of relief.

Before the game, Iona Prep’s Joe LaSorsa was presented the Ron Patnosh Player of the Year Award by the CHSAA for pitching to a 9-2 record and hitting .321 in 2016. He will play at St. John’s next season.
