James Francis Xavier Tierney, 94, died April 7 at home on Staten Island. He was 94.

He was the father of Father Joseph P. Tierney, president of Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx.

Tierney was an active parishioner of St. Sylvester’s parish on Staten Island for more than 80 years. He served as a lector and an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion and was a member of the Parish Council, Holy Name Society and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He also was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis.

Born in Bayonne, N.J., he served in the U.S. Army. He earned a master’s degree in guidance and personnel at Seton Hall University, after which he worked for Mack Trucks Inc., S.S.

White and Penwalt Corp. He later was a guidance counselor at Msgr. Farrell High School, Staten Island.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Doris, and son, Timothy. Besides Father Tierney, surviving are Mr. Tierney’s other children, Maureen Moynihan, James Tierney, Therese Hendrickson, Brigid Brady and Patrick Tierney. He was the grandfather of 15 and great-grandfather of six. He is also survived by his sister, Jane Milza.

A private burial was held at St. Peter’s Cemetery on Staten Island. A Memorial Mass will be offered at a later date.
