Lourdes’ Jones Leads Catholic School Athletes at State Track Meet

Jaheim Jones won two state public high school championships and later that day placed second in both events at the state federation meet to lead Catholic high school runners at Cicero-North Syracuse High School June 8 and 9.

The Our Lady of Lourdes High School junior sprinted to Division 2 first-place times of 10.71 seconds

and 21.74 in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, respectively. At the federation meet, he clocked second-place times of 10.57 in the 100 and 21.51 in the 200.

Cardinal Hayes’ Elijah Jones was third in the 200 in the federation meet in 21.72 and took third with

teammates Jose Franco, Sanjay Parilall and Jahlahnee Watkins in the 400-meter relay in 42.54.

Msgr. Farrell’s Charles Crispi cleared 15 feet, 3 inches to place third in the pole vault at the federation meet.

For the girls, Ursuline’s Lily Flynn was third in the federation’s 1,500-meter run in 4 minutes, 27.80 seconds.

Lourdes’ Caroline Timm followed in fourth overall and first among public high school division two runners to win a state public high school Division 2 title in 4:28.41.

Baseball—Iona Prep came up one win short of taking the CHSAA Class AA city championship for a second consecutive year, losing to Xaverian of Brooklyn, 5-0, at St. John’s University June 8.

Iona Prep was limited to two hits over 6 2/3 innings by Xaverian’s Shane Mugnolo.

Chris DiFiore retired the first 11 hitters he faced for the Gaels, who finished with a 24-5 record.

“It was a very special year especially considering we graduated 16 seniors a year ago,” Iona Prep coach Ryan Mahoney told CNY. “Our pitching was unreal all season. We allowed 16 runs in 18 league games during the regular season.

“No one has repeated in the Catholic baseball league in 41 years and we have made it to championship series the last three years,” said Mahoney of his Gaels who also were 2016 CHSAA Class AA champions.

Iona Prep forced a playback game in the double-elimination tournament by defeating Xavieran, 1-0, at Fordham University June 7. Junior Zaes Zabala delivered the game-winning single, scoring Ryan Diaz from third base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Sophomore Anthony DeFabbia scattered three hits, struck out four and was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Gaels.

“Anthony continued to show why he is going to be a high-level D1 (Division 1 college) pitcher,” Mahoney said. “He works fast, has a great mound presence and commands the strike zone. With the season on the line, he went out and delivered a great game.”

Softball—St. Catharine Academy finished the season with a 16-6 record after dropping a 13-3 decision to St. Edmund Prep in the CHSAA Class A city championship game June 6.

St. Catharine sophomores Shaniah Alago, Jaclyn Sanchez and Ciaran Iglesias each had a hit in a

three-run inning that tied the game 3-3.
