The formal groundbreaking for the Higgins Engineering and Science Center, a 30,000-square-foot academic building on the South Campus at Manhattan College will be held Thursday, April 26, at 1:30 p.m.
The official name of the building will be the Patricia & Cornelius J. Higgins ’62 Engineering & Science Center. The project was made possible thanks to a leadership gift of $5 million from Mr. and Mrs. Higgins, the college said.
Slated for completion in Autumn 2020, the Higgins Center will be the cornerstone of Manhattan College’s renovations to support its engineering and science programs. A grand atrium will welcome students and faculty to the three-story structure, and 14 ultramodern laboratories will support and expand teaching and research in the college’s engineering and science disciplines.
“Manhattan College had the greatest influence on what I had to do after graduation, provided me with an excellent basis, both moral and academic, to continue in graduate education and in an engineering career,” Higgins said in a statement. He graduated from Manhattan College in 1962 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
Both husband and wife hold a doctorate from the University of New Mexico—Higgins in civil engineering, and Mrs. Higgins in health education. Higgins is a founder and chairman emeritus of Applied Research Associates Inc., a national engineering and science firm based in Albuquerque, N.M. They are residents of Florida.
