Mount St. Michael Wins Archdiocesan Hoops Title

Mount St. Michael Academy is entering the CHSAA AA Division Intersectional playoffs with momentum after winning the archdiocesan basketball championship with a 73-69 victory over Archbishop Stepinac

The game was played at Mount St. Michael in the Bronx Feb. 25.

Elijah Buchanan scored 24 points for the Mountaineers (19-8), who also received 20 points from Jacob Rodriguez and 13 points and 13 rebounds from Joe Bull. For Stepinac (17-10), junior Alan Griffin had 39 points and 14 rebounds, and freshman RJ Davis added 13 points, six assists and four rebounds.

“Tremendous win for our program, school and alumni,” Mount St. Michael coach Tom Fraher told CNY. “The senior trio of Buchanan, Bull and Rodriguez led the team to the title. We are very proud of these kids.”

Mount St. Michael and Stepinac now will represent the archdiocese in the CHSAA AA Division Intersectional quarterfinals on Sunday, March 5, at Fordham University. The semifinals are March 8 at St. John’s University and the final is March 12 at Fordham.

The CHSAA A Division and B Division Intersectional championship games are Friday, March 3, at Fordham. No. 1 La Salle and No. 2 Sacred Heart are meeting for the B Division title at 6 p.m. The A Division finalists were still being determined at press time.
