Msgr. John Mulligan, who served at St. John’s parish in Piermont for 15 years, died May 14. He was 89.

Msgr. Mulligan was at St. John’s as senior priest administrator, 2009-2013, and pastor, 1998-2009.

A Funeral Mass will be offered Friday, May 21 in the Chapel of the John Cardinal O’Connor Pavilion in the Bronx, with Cardinal Dolan as celebrant and Auxiliary Bishop Edmund Whalen, vicar for clergy in the archdiocese, as homilist.

Msgr. Mulligan and Bishop Whalen both served at schools in the archdiocese. Msgr. Mulligan, a graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, served in the Bronx on the faculties of Cardinal Hayes, 1978-1997, and Cardinal Spellman, 1970-1978. Bishop Whalen, a graduate of Msgr. Farrell High School on Staten Island, served at Msgr. Farrell as principal and a faculty member.

“He was dedicated to his students,” Bishop Whalen said. “He loved his parish in Piermont. He loved the people there. He loved to tell stories of his days there, Hayes and Spellman.

“He was a good, faithful, hard-working priest. He is a priest who served well and now goes home to God as an example to others and we’re grateful for his service.”

Msgr. Mulligan was parochial vicar of Our Saviour, Manhattan, 1997-1998; St. Anthony’s, West Harrison, 1967-1970; and St. Joseph’s, Kingston, 1964-1967.

He was named a monsignor in 1999.

Born in New York City, he earned a bachelor’s degree in social sciences from St. John’s University, Queens, before completing studies for the priesthood at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie. He was ordained by Cardinal Francis Spellman at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in 1964.
