Not Up to Par

Posted

Your choice for a feature photo on the front page of the Sept. 10 issue—a child playing golf—astounded me. Perhaps your intention was to encourage a positive, cheery outlook, but the impression it is more likely to leave is, whistling in the dark. Our Catholic reaction to the pandemic has resulted in a catastrophic drop in religious practice and, in many parishes, a similar drop in contributions. Looking beyond the pandemic-related situation, marriage numbers keep going down, and out-of-wedlock births go up, and the huge New York Archdiocese ordained three or four priests this year—not one of whom grew up here—while many more retire or die.

Please try to put a more prophetic message on your front page, and, hopefully, in biweekly articles that face up to the Church’s serious problems.
