The Thomas Merton Society-NYC will sponsor a lecture, “Prophecy & Policy: Merton, M.A.D., (And Us),” at Corpus Christi Church in Manhattan, Saturday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m.

The church, which is co-sponsoring the talk, is located at 529 W. 121st St.

The speaker will be Peter Steinfels, a former senior religion editor at The New York Times, former editor of Commonweal magazine and professor emeritus at Fordham University, where he and his wife, Margaret O’Brien Steinfels, founded the Fordham Center on Religion and Culture.

Steinfels will discuss writings of the Trappist monk, which dealt with the civil unrest of the 1960s, including nuclear proliferation and the Church’s “just-war theory,” and the threat that such proliferation poses to humanity today.

M.A.D. in the talk’s title stands for Mutual Assured Destruction.

The talk also will focus on the value of peace building through the nonviolent alternative embodied by Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatmas Gandhi and others. Admission is free, with registration recommended in advance. Information: (212) 666-9350 or email: cchristinyc@gmail.com
