The Catholic and Dominican Institute will launch its speaker series on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m., with “Portraits of Biblical Women, Then and Now,” a talk by Sister Barbara E. Reid, O.P., in Room 218 of Mount St. Mary College’s Dominican Center, 330 Powell Ave., Newburgh.

Sister Barbara, a Dominican Sister of Grand Rapids, Mich., will give her audience a look of how biblical women are depicted in Scripture, in art and in the St. John’s Bible, and what they have to say today. She will focus on the three Marys: the mother of Jesus, Mary (and Martha) of Bethany and Mary Magdalene.

A professor of New Testament Studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago since 1988, Sister Barbara holds a doctorate in biblical studies from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and a master’s in religious studies from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids.
