Remembering 9/11

The victims and heroes of 9/11 were remembered and honored at the Eve of Solemn Remembrance on Staten Island Sept. 6, and at the Father Mychal Judge Walk of Remembrance in Manhattan Sept. 10.

The University of Notre Dame Club of Staten Island held its annual Eve of Solemn Remembrance at Our Lady of Pity Church on Staten Island. Msgr. Edmund Whalen, principal of Msgr. Farrell High School, celebrated the Mass. Notre Dame Club members and Catholic high school students from Staten Island read the names of the Staten Island residents, who were killed in the 9/11 attacks.

The annual Father Mychal Judge Walk of Remembrance, dating to 2002, was held in Manhattan. The day started with Mass celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi by Father Christopher Keenan, O.F.M., a chaplain of the New York City Fire Department, same as Father Judge, who was killed while responding at the World Trade Center on 9/11. This year’s walk also honored NYPD Detective Steven McDonald, a longtime participant and good friend of Father Judge’s, who died at age 59 in January. His widow, Patti Ann, and their adult son, Conor, participated.
