Sister Alice Haertel, M.M.

Sister Alice Haertel, M.M., who served as a missioner to Hawaii and the Philippines, died Jan. 26. She was 87. 

   She was assigned to Hawaii in 1946, where she taught in grade schools for 15 years. From 1961 to 1969, she served as a high school teacher and principal in the Philippines. She was reassigned to Hawaii in 1975, again as a high school teacher and principal.

    From 1969 to 1975 she taught at Rogers College at Maryknoll. In 1979, she returned to the Maryknoll Sisters Center where she did administrative work and writing projects for the sisters’ direct mail department.

   Born in the Bronx, she entered Maryknoll in 1938 and professed final vows in 1944. Early in religious life, she was known as Sister Margaret Jude.

   She held a bachelor’s degree from Rogers College and a master’s in education from the University of the Philippines.

   A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 29 in the Maryknoll Sisters Chapel, with burial in the sisters’ cemetery.
