Sister Alice Shannon, R.D.C., who was the first principal of John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in Somers, died Jan. 22 at Good Counsel Convent in White Plains. She was 88.

She was appointed principal of the school when it opened in 1966 and served until 1972.

She previously served as principal of Kennedy Catholic’s predecessor school, St. Mary’s High School in Katonah, 1963-1966.

Sister Alice began her teaching career in the Bronx at St. Frances de Chantal School and Preston High School. She was assistant director of admissions at Manhattan College until 1990.

Born in the Bronx, she entered the Sisters of the Divine Compassion in 1939 and professed final vows in 1947. She was formerly known as Sister Mary Imelda.

She held a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Good Counsel College and a master’s from Fordham University.

She is survived by a sister, Ruth Smith.

A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 25 in the Chapel of the Divine Compassion in White Plains, with burial in Calvary Cemetery.
