Sister Antonia Maria Guerrieri, M.M.

Sister Antonia Maria Guerrieri, M.M., a medical doctor who did pastoral visitations in hospitals until she was 97 years old, died Feb. 13 at Maryknoll Residential Care. She was 100.

She ran clinics and did other medical work in Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan for 55 years before retiring to Maryknoll in Ossining in 2000.

In her retirement, she did pastoral visitation at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow and at other area hospitals until 2005 (CNY, March 2004).

Born in Stockbridge, Mass., she attended Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass., and Marquette University School of Medicine in Wisconsin, where she received her medical degree in 1934.

She entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1935 and professed final vows in 1941.

Sister Antonia Maria was assigned to Hong Kong in 1939 where she engaged in language study and did medical work. In 1941 she practiced as a doctor in clinics elsewhere in China, then returned to Hong Kong in 1951 doing social service and catechetical work.

She went to the Maryknoll Sisters clinic in Pusan, Korea, in 1953, which cared for 1,000 Korean War refugees a day. Assigned to Taiwan in 1954, she opened a clinic in Changhua and was its medical director until 1987.

She then did pastoral ministry in another hospital and in 1990 moved to the Maryknoll Sisters Center in Taichung where she did pastoral visiting to people in need. In 1993, she received the “Good Person, Good Deeds” award from Taiwan President Lee Teng Hui.

A Funeral Mass was offered Feb. 20 in the main chapel of the Maryknoll Sisters Center in Ossining, with burial at Maryknoll Sisters Cemetery.
