Sister Catherine Maher, O.P., who taught at St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill for 30 years, died Oct. 7 at Dominican Convent in Sparkill. She was 90. She taught Spanish at the college from 1958 until her retirement in 1988. She also taught at Cathedral High School in Manhattan, 1949-1958; Aquinas High School in the Bronx, 1945-1949; St. Catherine of Siena School in Manhattan, 1943-1945; and in Brooklyn. After retiring she was the receptionist at Thorpe Senior Center in Sparkill. Born in Tipperary, Ireland, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill in 1938 and professed final vows in 1945. She held a bachelor's degree in English from Manhattan College, a master's in Spanish from St. John's University and a professional diploma in Spanish from Columbia University. She also studied at the University of Havana, and, as a Fulbright scholar, in a summer program at the University of Cartegena and the University of the Andes in Colombia. A Funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 11 at Dominican Convent, with burial in St. Agnes Cemetery in Sparkill.
