Sister Catherine O’Shea, C.N.D.

Sister Catherine O’Shea, C.N.D., who taught at St. Jean Baptiste High School and parish on Manhattan’s Upper East Side for 44 years, died Dec. 30 at St. John’s Hospital in Yonkers. She was 90.

She taught at St. Jean Baptiste, 1970-2014, and at Baruch College, Manhattan, and in recent years parish religious education at St. Ignatius Loyola, also in Manhattan. Collectively for more than 60 years, she taught elementary, secondary, and adult education in New York and Rhode Island.

Born in Providence, R.I., she entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1945 and made final vows in 1953.

She earned a master’s degree in English from Rhode Island College and a bachelor’s in education from Catholic Teacher’s College, both in Providence.

A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 2 in the convent chapel of Villa Notre Dame, of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, in Wilton, Conn. Burial was at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Danbury, Conn.
