Sister Catherine Wescott, O.P., who served at Mount St. Mary College in Newburgh, died Nov. 27 at The Wartburg in Mount Vernon. She was 89.

She was supervisor of student teachers at Mount St. Mary College, 1973-1979, and was a professor there, 1965-1967. She also did clerical services, 1971-1973.

She taught at Our Lady of Victory School, Mount Vernon, 1947-1954.

She served as a professor at the University of New Mexico from 1981 until her retirement in 1997.

She was a teacher and guidance counselor in New Jersey, and a teacher and principal in North Carolina.

Born in Gloucester, N.J., she entered the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh in 1941 and professed final vows in 1949. She was formerly known as Sister Mary Innocent.

She held a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and a master’s degree in educational psychology, both from Villanova University, and a doctorate in special education administration from the University of Colorado.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 3 at Mount St. Mary College. Burial followed at the Dominican Sisters’ cemetery at Mount St. Mary College.
