Sister Catherine William Moran, O.P., who served as a principal and teacher in the archdiocese and later was assistant superintendent of schools for the Archdiocese of Newark, N.J., died Dec. 1 in Montefiore Nyack Hospital. She was 94.

She served as assistant superintendent of schools in the Archdiocese of Newark, 1983-1986, and was human resources director at the New Community Corporation in Newark, 1986-2006.

In the Archdiocese of New York, she was principal of Albertus Magnus High School, Bardonia, 1975-1983, where she taught, 1959-1962, and St. Vito’s School, Mamaroneck, 1962-1966. She also taught at St. Martin of Tours, the Bronx, 1948-1952, and St. Agnes Home and School, Sparkill, 1947-1948.

She also served at schools in Richmond Hill, Queens, and Hicksville, Long Island.

Born in Brooklyn, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill in 1945 and made final vows in 1952. She held a bachelor’s degree in education from Fordham University, and a master’s in English from St. John’s University.

On Sept. 12, 2000, she was welcomed as guest chaplain in the U.S House of Representatives, the first non-ordained woman to offer the opening prayer.

She is survived by her sister Anne Boardman and 22 nieces and nephews.

Her funeral arrangements were private.
