Sister Dorothy Wieting, O.P., who taught at Dominican College in Orangeburg, died Oct. 4. She was 97.

She was a speech pathology instructor at Dominican College from 1967 until her retirement in 1982.

She earlier taught in the Bronx at St. Luke’s, 1963-1966, St. Anselm’s, 1955-1963, Our Lady of Victory, 1951-1952 and Holy Spirit, 1943-1947. She taught at St. Dominic’s Home, Blauvelt, 1954-1955; Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Academy, Goshen, 1947-1951 and St. Peter’s in Liberty, 1939-1943.

In retirement, she served in Blauvelt at Dominican Convent as an archivist; at St. Dominic’s Convent in Blauvelt as a speech therapist, 1991-1994; a director of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and a grants researcher, Dominican College, Blauvelt, 1994-2001; and a catechetical special education preparation instructor and a Bible study leader at St. Catherine’s parish, Blauvelt.

She served as a lecturer and lay minister in Rockland County and served at St. Augustine’s parish in New City, 2008-2011.

In 2012, at the age of 95, Sister Dorothy retired to the St. Martin de Porres community in Blauvelt.

Born in Brooklyn, she entered the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt in 1936 and professed final vows in 1941.

She earned a doctorate in speech pathology from Columbia University, a master’s degree in education and speech and a bachelor’s degree in education from Fordham University.

A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 9 at St. Dominic’s Convent in Blauvelt. Burial was in St. Dominic’s Convent Cemetery.
