Sister Elaine Dostal, O.P.

Sister Elaine Dostal, O.P., of the Dominican Sisters of Hope in Ossining, died Aug. 8 in Mount Vernon. She was 89.

She taught in the archdiocese at St. Mary’s School, Newburgh, 1944-1945, and at St. Mary’s Academy, also in Newburgh, where she taught math from 1960 to 1973. She also served as a part-time instructor in mathematics at Mount St. Mary College, Newburgh, in 1961 and taught summer sessions there in the late 1960s.

She also taught at schools in New Jersey and Connecticut, and did chaplaincy work in three Danbury, Conn., nursing homes from 1986 to 1994. From 1994 to 2001, she was a finance clerk for the Dominican Sisters of Hope in Newburgh.

Born in Trenton, N.J., she entered the Dominican Sisters in 1941 and professed final vows in 1949. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics from Villanova University.

A Funeral Mass was offered Aug. 15 at Mount St. Mary Chapel in Newburgh, with burial in the sisters’ cemetery there.
