Sister Eleanor O’Doherty, S.C., who served as a librarian for more than 20 years at St. Barnabas High School in the Bronx and also taught at several other schools in the archdiocese, died April 2 at Mary the Queen Convent in Yonkers. She was 69.

She served as a librarian at St. Barnabas High School in the Bronx, 1983-2000 and 2001-2006.

She began her teaching career at St. Anthony’s School in the Bronx in 1956, moving on to St. Agnes School in Manhattan in 1958. She then taught at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Manhattan, 1960-1962, the Academy of the Resurrection, Rye, 1962-1967, and St. Gabriel High School, New Rochelle, 1967-1971 and 1973-1978. She also taught in York, Pa.

In 1978 she interned at Network, a Catholic organization based in Washington, D.C., that lobbies to address the needs of the poor and the root causes of poverty.

Returning to New York in 1979, she served as social concerns director at the Seton Center in Manhattan until 1983.

Born in the Bronx, she entered the Sisters of Charity in 1952 and professed final vows in 1960. She was formerly known as Sister Mary Brendan. She held a bachelor’s degree in history from the College of Mount St. Vincent, and two master’s degrees, in American history from Fordham University and in library science from St. John’s University.

Her sister, Patricia McShane, survives her. A Funeral Mass was offered April 8 at Mary the Queen Convent. Burial followed at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Yonkers.
