Sister Eleanora Murphy, S.U., who taught in Kingston and New York City, died Jan. 29 at the Baptist Home, Rhinebeck. She was 96.

She was teacher, principal and religious superior at the Academy of St. Ursula, Kingston, 1944-1952 and 1959-1964, and at Notre Dame School, Manhattan, 1953-1959 and 1969-1977. She also taught at Cathedral High School, 1942-1944, 1964-1965, and Nativity Mission Center, 1979-1982, both in Manhattan. She was also a teacher in Tours and Compiegne, France, and served in Wilmington, N.C. She was on the staff of the Linwood Spiritual Center, Rhinebeck, 1989-2007.

She remained at Linwood in retirement until shortly before her death.

Born in Kingston, she entered the Society of St. Ursula in 1935 and professed final vows in 1942. She received a master’s degree in classics at Fordham University and pursued advanced studies at the Weston School of Theology, Boston.

A Funeral Mass was offered Feb. 3 at the Linwood Spiritual Center followed by interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Kingston.
