Sister Elizabeth Carmela Engelhardt, S.C.

Sister Elizabeth Carmela Engelhardt, S.C., an elementary school teacher in the archdiocese, died Oct. 6 at Kittay Senior Apartments in the Bronx. She was 98.

She taught at SS. Peter and Paul School, the Bronx, 1958-1961; St. Mary, Wappingers Falls, 1957-1958, and St. Gabriel, New Rochelle, 1955-1956. She enjoyed preparing children for the reception of First Holy Communion.

She served in a clerical capacity at the New York Foundling, Manhattan, 1961-1992, and as a group mother at St. Agatha Home, Nanuet, 1961. She was at Mount St. Vincent, 1956-1957, and at Grace Institute, Manhattan and St. Patrick Villa, Nanuet, 1955.

She retired to St. Patrick Villa, Nanuet, in 1992.

In 2010, she moved to Mary the Queen Convent in Yonkers, and in 2014 was among the initial group of sisters to form a retirement community at Kittay Senior Apartments.

Born in New York City, she entered the Sisters of Charity of New York in 1952 and made final vows in 1960.

A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 11 at Mount St. Vincent Convent Chapel, the Bronx. Burial was at St. Joseph Cemetery, Yonkers.
