Sister Ermelinda Cordasco, C.S.JB., who served at St. John Villa Academy on Staten Island for 57 years, died Feb. 7 at Mount St. John Convent in Purchase. She was 106.

Sister Ermelinda was at St. John Villa, 1974-2011, 1964-1966, 1942-1958, 1938-1939 and 1932, as a teacher, assistant principal, administrator, directress of the girls residence and directress of postulants. She served as superior and principal at St. Dominic School, the Bronx, 1967-1970 and 1960; and taught at Our Lady of Loretto, Manhattan, 1937-1938 and 1933. 

She also served in Brooklyn, Gloversville, New Jersey and Chile.

Born in Newark, N.J., she entered the Sisters of St. John the Baptist in 1930 and professed final vows in 1937.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary English from Fordham University, the Bronx; a master’s in Italian from Fordham University; and a master’s in Spanish from Middlebury School of Language in Vermont.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 13 in Sacred Heart Church, Dobbs Ferry. Burial was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne.
